There is a proud tradition among many South African Jews that their immigrant ancestors were Litvaks.
Why so many Jews from the Eastern European Pale of settlement - from Lithuania, Latvia and eastern Poland, chose to go to South Africa rather than to North America is a question that has often been asked. Recently this "folk memory" has been validated by a number of sociological studies.
Using examples from the migration stories and experiences of her own extended family, Maureen will trace the fascinating history of the Litvak - South African connection.
