What is the origin story of your business? Tell us how and why you started — what inspired you?

It’s my calling. There’s something magical about the process of creating from scratch, using my skills and experience to bring a vision to life. The feeling of accomplishment that comes with building things that express both beauty and function, and the satisfaction brought on by client’s smiles at the completion of a project. Quietly walking away knowing that I've left something that will be meaningful and well used for years to come. Whether it's a custom hidden-door bookshelf, a period-specific mantel, or an entire historic restoration, I take pride in every detail and strive to deliver a finished product that exceeds expectations; one project at a time. And, fortunately we have the perfect home base here in Hamilton in which to share our work and contribute to the revitalization of such a vibrant and historic city"

What does your business do, and who is your ideal client or customer?

Based in beautiful Dundas Ontario, we are a small custom carpentry outfit. With more than 25 years’ experience, Moïse Bensimon, lead designer and carpenter, delivers a superior level of craftsmanship and personally manages each and every project. His background in civil engineering and his expertise in residential construction provides a foundational knowledge of design-build practises. This is especially valuable for those evaluating finish carpentry options for either home renovations or new home construction. He will tell you like it is. What makes his skill set so unique is that he is both designer and craftsman. From design consultation all along to precision installation, a single point of contact and accountability, ensuring nothing gets lost in translation.

What do you love most about running your business?

There’s a kind of satisfaction that comes from working with your hands, solving problems, and knowing that what you built will be used and appreciated for years to come. I also really value the relationships I make along the way, getting to know people, understanding their space and their needs, and that never gets old.

How can the community best support you?

Word of mouth is everything in this kind of work. If you’ve had a good experience or appreciate what I do, telling a friend or neighbour goes a long way. I also welcome people to follow along @bensimondesign. And of course, if you have a project in mind, we'd love to hear about it. Even if it’s just the seed of an idea, we can figure out what’s possible together. No obligation consultations.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned on your entrepreneurial journey?

Doing great work isn’t enough. You also have to communicate it. I used to think the craftsmanship should speak for itself, and in a way, it does but not until the project is completed. Over time I’ve realized that taking the time to walk clients through the process, to explain the "why" behind each detail, is just as important as the build itself. People value not only what you make, but how you make them feel throughout the journey. That’s what builds trust, and that’s what brings them back.

Has your Jewish identity, values, or community experience influenced your business in any way?

My Jewish identity is rooted in values like integrity, community, and tikkun olam. In my work, that translates to taking pride in the details, standing behind what I build, and treating people with respect and honesty. There’s also a deep tradition of craftsmanship and hands-on work in Jewish history, which I feel connected to. And honestly, word-of-mouth and trust in the community have played a huge part in growing my business and I don’t take that for granted.
