Gina's parents were Dutch farmers who quietly became heroes living near the German border. They joined the Dutch underground resistance and traced their life to hide Jews and others fleeing Nazi persecution. Under farm, they created a highland sanctuary providing shelter, food, and care under construct threat of discovery. The bravery, resourcefulness and deep compassion saved lives and left the legacy of extraordinary moral courage in the face of. We are humble and honored by your presence tonight, and on behalf of the Hamilton Jewish Federation. I would like you to come to accept a token of appreciation for us."
Gina's remarks: I am totally honoured to have this. This is beyond words, but if you knew my parents. They were such ordinary, humble people on a little farm that was really nothing compared to today. And they put their life in danger by hiding Jews and they were kept safe while they were there, even though Germans came in the house, searched, never found them. Had the gun on my dad and they left. They never found the Jews. And they would be flabbergasted to see this today, that we're honoring them because they were so humble and so ordinary. And it almost brings tears to my eyes that they just did this because it was the right thing to do. And I am so proud of them that they did that."
